Buffalo Bill Mathewson
The Original
Buffalo Bill Mathewson deserves a Web site all his own. I've done a Google search, and found a number of sites referring to him ... but nothing (so far) as what he deserves.
Everyone's heard of Buffalo Bill Cody. His Wild West Show made sure of that, along with countless dime novels and a knack for self-promotion.
But Buffalo Bill Mathewson was a quieter, more modest frontiersman. He gained his nickname when feeding a number of starving settlers. Although he apparently resented, to some degree, Cody's fame and the use of the name "Buffalo Bill," he showed little desire to promote himself as the original Buffalo Bill.
Mathewson's grave is in Wichita, Kansas, just a short distance from the world famous cattle trail he helped bring into existence. (Keep an eye on this Web site. I will have more later ...)
